That evening Jonas reached his own apartment and felt too tired to even have dinner. He wanted to see Justin, but in that exact moment his overriding desire was just to be left alone, after throwing his briefcase on the table and grabbing a bottle of water he walked into the bedroom and lay on the bed, trying to decompress from the long day he had.

“I am wondering whether days like this can undermine our future life together,” he whispered as he laid back on the bed.

It didn’t take much time for him to fall asleep, and when he woke up, it was already half past midnight. He wondered why Justin didn’t call, but as he switched on the light, he realized that he had been sleeping so soundly that he didn’t even hear his phone, Justin had called more than once. But that was not all, when he didn’t reply Justin came to check on Jonas’ apartment and upon seeing him asleep, Justin undressed and climbed into bed beside him.

At least I can now be sure that living together will not undermine our relationship. He’d been so sweet not to wake me up, he thought gently caressing Justin’s hair. We both know the kind of toll our profession can take in our lives; I shouldn’t have doubted his understanding.

He stood up, trying to be as silent as possible and undressed, so as to climb back into bed and continue sleeping next to his fiancé.

The next morning Jonas’ alarm clock started to ring as usual at seven o’clock; he tried to shut it off before it could wake Justin up, but he was already awake.

“Good morning...” yawned Justin.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” replied Jonas, kissing Justin’s lips. “Thanks for not waking me up last night.”

“That was not entirely my plan. I wanted to wake you up, and believe me, I did everything I could, but then I realized that you might have been too tired. So I thought that the next best thing would have been just falling asleep at your side.”

“That was something I really appreciated. I love falling asleep with you at my side, and I am sorry I have been so damn tired, and unable to spend time with you lately,” Jonas said, standing up from the bed. “Oh, I didn’t get the chance to tell you last night, I have a meeting in about an hour with Ethan Jackson down at the Department if you want to come. This might be a good chance for you to ask all the questions you think we might need.”

“That was the reason you came home late yesterday?” Justin also stood up fetching his clothes from the floor.

“Yes,” Jonas replied as he went to have a shower. “Since I got the permission to reopen the case, I didn’t want to waste a single second, so I decided to call and see if he could come down to the Department today,” Jonas explained from under the shower.

“That’s great, I will go grab a shower too, meet you downstairs in the parking garage?” Justin asked.
