37 ALIEN ABDUCTIONS

WHILE WE WERE STILL SITTING AROUND the Jedi counsel table in our augmented reality, I raised my virtuality glasses and took a bracing breath, glad to see my 2027 office and desk with its real-world view of nature.

“Brian, do you mind opening a window?” I had to put my head between my knees.

“Sure. You okay?” He raised his glasses too and headed toward the windows.

“Yeah, just a nauseated Jedi. The graphics are so good, I lose my bearings. But it’s like car sickness, if you know that feeling. Ah, sea air. Thank you—I feel better already.” I walked to the desk and picked up Molly’s pen to further stabilize myself and went to the window for some deep breathing. “Can we go back to just the plain old 2D V-room conference screen? The Star Wars effect is making my head spin.” I returned to the table feeling steadier.

“Sure,” Eric said. “But soon Brian and I will be able to meet for real in the Jedi chamber. They’re already working on something called holograph overlay.”

“More or less real, but we wouldn’t leave you out, Sean. You would be piped in on a flat-screen.”

Buttons were pushed, and we all appeared onscreen where we were physically.

“Okay,” I said, feeling so 2D and 2022. “My question is, so what does the wired-in world or your buddy, QC, have to say about the reality of alien abduction?”
