Chapter Fifteen

Blood pounded behind Brian’s eyes as they opened. The strikes that his face endured from Dallas were hard and his head was making Brian profanely aware of that fact. His head swung loose as the Hellions carried him hurriedly across barren stone, kicking dust into his face with each step. His hands were restrained with thin rope and his mouth was bound shut with a torn piece of fabric – likely from Brian’s own shirt, based on the draft on his exposed midsection. As his vision returned through the blurred mosaic of his temporary unconsciousness, Brian found himself staring at a clear night sky – framed by the shuffling bodies of six or so Hellions. Muffled whispering and exasperated grunting chorused the hurried pace to wherever it was they were taking Brian. He began to correct the limpness of his neck by tilting his head forward to see if he could catch a glimpse of the posse’s intended destination.

Through the cracks of the shuffling figures, Brian could see Dallas leading the pack. He was draped in a dark, silky suit and, by the looks of his collar, a white shirt. He strode as though he hadn’t a care in the world. He occasionally looked up to the sky to take in the sight of the starry night. He seemed fairly content with himself.

After a few more minutes of Brian’s face being showered in dust from the scrambling feet around him, he was relieved to hear the footsteps muffled by grass. With the sound of the steps dulled, the soft trickling of water began to swell the further they progressed.

“Here’s fine,” Dallas said softly to the group that followed.

His words were laced with gleeful notes. Brian’s body was quickly wrenched upward and he was placed on his feet. His knees nearly buckled when confronted with the unexpected weight of his own body. The Hellions lined up behind Brian, creating a barrier at his back. He turned and noticed that most of the faces he saw belonged to the Sales team. He hadn’t met any of them beyond initial greetings, save for Jeremy. The shy, young Hellion stood at the left end of the barricade. His multi-eyes did not lift higher than Brian’s exposed belly button. Brian frowned from the disappointing reveal and winced at the pain the frown caused his quickly bruising face. Brian’s attention was taken by his surroundings. Finally, being able to get a full view, Brian was surprised to find himself standing in front of the ivory fountain in the courtyard of Hell. Dallas sat at the lip of the basin, one leg crossed over the other. A wide, carefree smile was plastered on his face as he scanned the courtyard. His gaze moved from the sky, to the arched pillars of the walkway, and finally to Brian.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Dallas said to Brian.

The smile refused to leave his face, making Brian feel infinitely uncomfortable. Dallas didn’t seem to notice that the ripped fabric still muffled Brian’s mouth – he also didn’t seem to care.
