âI thought you were going home,â Vic said when he saw Erin.
âI was. Then I came back.â
âForget something?â
âNo, I thought of something. I know why our guy picked out an ordinary girl and dressed her as a hooker.â
âBecause real hookers are expensive?â Vic guessed.
âNo, because theyâre suspicious,â she said. âAny street girl whoâs been around knows better than to take a drink from a stranger. Itâs hard to kidnap a prostitute.â
Vic nodded. âYeah, you got a point. Working girls fight back. Plus, thereâs the pimp to consider. One of those guys sees a john carrying one of his girls out of a club, thereâs a good chance he pulls a knife or a gun.â
âToo many variables, too much risk,â Erin said.
âOkay, I believe you,â Vic said. âBut that couldnât have waited until tomorrow?â
âI had some other stuff to take care of. I donât live that far away.â
He shrugged. âIf this is how you get your kicks, Iâm not gonna tell you how to spend your downtime. But you might have wanted to get some sleep.â
âVic, itâs not even seven oâ clock. That hasnât been my bedtime since I was three.â
âYou know the reason for early bedtime for toddlers is so mommy and daddy can have grown-up time, donât you?â
âVicâ¦â she began warningly.
âYouâre picturing it right now, arenât you,â he said with a grin. âYour mom and dad, in their bedroomâ¦â
âYou asked me to shoot you earlier today,â she reminded him. âIâm still armed. I could change my mind.â
âSpeaking of angry women with loaded firearms,â he said, âI just talked to Zofia. She says her squad is working a case with a Lucarelli dealer and she might have something for me. She said itâs kismet. I dunno what that is. Some new street drug, maybe.â
âI think itâs another word for fate,â Erin said.
âOh.â
âVic, is it possible for English to be your second language if you donât have a first language?â
âI do have a first language.â
âWhat is it?â
He held up a large fist, showing the scars on the backs of his knuckles.
âSo⦠Piekarski?â Erin prompted.
âSheâs on the Lower East Side, Little Italy,â he said. âTheyâre setting up in a surveillance van. I said weâd drop by in a couple hours. I was about to call you. You want to catch some Zs before then?â
âNot if it means sleeping on the break room couch.â
âIâve slept on that couch.â
âYeah, you and God only knows what else. Hard pass. Iâll just drink lots of coffee.â
âMountain Dew for me,â Vic said. âEverybodyâs got their chemical dependencies. See? I can speak English just fine. I got your kismet right here.â
