The Fugitive

“What the—”

Lucky hugged Skylar tight to his chest and managed to dodge the traffic long enough to get out of the street and safely onto a sidewalk. He fell against a tree, shaking and exhausted.

Skylar showed no signs of regaining consciousness.

“You and your kid always play in traffic in the middle of the day?”

Lucky looked up and saw an unshaven man in dark shades leaning out the window of a green and yellow taxi, idling at the curb just a few yards away. Gathering Skylar close, he stumbled to the vehicle and crawled into the back seat. He dragged Skylar into the far corner and sank into the faux leather upholstery.

There was a thick odor inside the vehicle—coffee breath, cigarettes, and someone who didn’t use deodorant. The driver glanced at them in the rearview mirror. “Sorry—I didn’t realize that was a full-grown man you were carrying.” The man steered into the flow of traffic. “By the way, you do realize there’s smoke coming from his stumps, don’t you?”

Several seconds passed in silence; Lucky hadn’t spoken or even opened his eyes since collapsing in the taxi. “I don’t mean to be insensitive,” probed the driver, “but what happened to his legs?”

Lucky exhaled softly. “Somebody stole his prosthetics.”

“Shit, are you kidding me? Man, what’s this world coming to, huh?”

Several more quiet moments passed before the driver shifted uncomfortably in his seat. “So listen, pal, where you want me to—whoa!” The driver punched his horn as another car cut in front of him. He slammed on the brakes and jerked the steering wheel sharply to avoid a collision. His sunglasses slid down his nose with the abrupt movement, exposing his eyes.

The sudden jolt caused Lucky to look up—just in time to glimpse the scarlet red eyes looking back at him in the rearview mirror. “You’re a demon!” Lucky shouted, sitting upright in the seat.

Disheveled and muttering curses under his breath, the driver repositioned his glasses with one hand, gripping the steering wheel with the other. “Yeah, no shit. What gave it away, Einstein?”

“Your eyes!”

“That was a rhetorical question, smart-ass.” The driver glanced at them again. “Hey, wait a minute. I know who you are. You’re the guy who went into Teyr with that angel—Belial made fools out of both of you.”

If Lucky hadn’t been worried about being in a taxi driven by a demon up until this point, he was now. “How do you know about that already? It was just a few minutes ago.”

“A few minutes? Maybe for you it was. Time in the eternal dimensions isn’t linear like it is here. It’s more like a sphere, with the past, present, and future all coexisting. A few hours there can be days here.” The driver sighed. “Don’t bother trying to wrap your head around it. I’m guessing you’ve already got enough on your mind.”

But Lucky had stopped listening. He was looking at Skylar, holding him close; his body was shaking as he rocked back and forth.

The cabbie tried to sound comforting. “Now that I know you were in Teyr, I got a pretty good idea what happened to your buddy’s legs.
