APPENDIX III

Information From Ernest James Klapper

A letter from Ernest James Klapper in England to his Texas cousins has survived and is reproduced here as it contains information on the early Klapper family. The letter was written to William Richard Klapper on March 14, 1972.

It should be noted that further research has found that some errors exist in this data but it is included as this appendix to make available to future researchers a major source of information on the Klapper family.

Dear Richard and Helen,

Thank you very much for your very interesting letter which did not reach me until the 8th March; This was because it was addressed wrongly and traveled round England. The address is as written at the head of this page where the letters and figures after London form a Postal Code which is helpful. Virginia’s letters have also been delayed because the code has been incorrectly stated. Your letter was addressed to Nottingham and added to the confusion. My typewriter is not too clear between the capitals of N and M. Having got this straight I will try to answer most of your queries.

I am very glad to know that you came through the European campaign safely. You may know that your father and uncle (Will and Charles) had a similar experience in the First War, arriving via England for France but not being able to look up the English relatives.

I am enclosing on a separate sheet the two family trees and indicated the inter-relationship, so far as I know it. On these I have only given full details so far as they relate to your Grandfather Ernest and my Grandfather Charles. Fuller details to the limit of my knowledge appear below.

GOTTFRIED Klapper, 1798-1880: Details taken from the flyleaf of a German Bible published in 1736. He was born in Toeplinda, Kreiss Muensterberg Silesia. This was part of Prussian Poland and we have always believed that he was a Pole with probably Nagyar connections. We have also believed that he was a Miller and the name reflects the rattle of the Mill wheels. There were four sons and four daughters – apart from the birth dates nothing is known of these girls.

Charles William, 1832-1887 the eldest son and my Grandfather came via Holland to England with a sabre slash on his back intending to go through to America, in the 1850’s but set up in Leeds and soon called his three brothers over and they opened a confectionery and catering business. The three younger brothers married and left the joint enterprise which then collapsed and Charles William came to London and opened a business in the City Road and married Elizabeth Moffatt in 1866. After two years or so they took over the general shop in Spitalfields that was owned by his wife’s father. On my father’s marriage to Edith Isabel Moffatt in 1890 he took over the business and my Grandmother moved to 19 Fairfield Road, Bow, London.
