CHAPTER 9

THE BOUNTY HUNTER

After shouting ourselves hoarse to be rescued or let go, exhaustion took hold and we fell asleep. Because of this, I did not know how much time had passed when the bag was unceremoniously ripped from over my head. The burlap was so rough that it scratched my face on the way off. The darkness inside the sack wasn’t so different from that of the surrounding night, but it was disorienting. Plus, there was a bright fire roaring a few feet away. I blinked until my eyes adjusted and saw,

“You!”

Our captor was none other than the amaranthine messenger who’d delivered the crystal from my brother when we were with the Charity Run. Osa? Was that her name? She wasn’t looking at us. She was moving around a makeshift camp site, stoking the flames on the fire, and unpacking a water skin from a canvas bag. Gone was the cool shade of the Forest of Arden. Crumbling peaks surrounded our outcrop and the echoing sound of falling stones was ever-present. We were in the Stone Rot Mountains.

I looked to my side. Reginald was out of his sack as well. He was slumped forward, chin resting on his chest. At first, I thought he was dead or knocked out—but then he let out a loud snore. I rolled my eyes and looked back at our captor.

“What is going on? Why have you captured us?” She continued to ignore me in favor of the minor tasks she was performing. “Are you taking us to Tannith?”

She paused at that and turned to face me.

“The demon?” she asked, lilac eyes questioning. “Why would I be taking you to him?”

Confusion and relief mixed uncomfortably in my body. “No reason,” I said with a casual shrug.

She kept staring at me for a few more beats before saying, “Uh huh.”

(I don’t think she bought it.)

Reginald slipped from his upright position and fell onto my shoulder.

“Will-you-wake-up-Reg!” I nudged him as hard as I could with my hands tied behind my back. He snorted, then startled.

“What? What did I miss?”

“You missed being kidnapped.”

“Kidnapped?” he cried, looking wildly around, then memory caught up with him. “Oh, right. Kidnapped.” Narrowing his eyes at me he said, “What did you do this time?”

“Me?” I said, eyebrows raised in shock. “Why do you assume I did something?”

His eyebrows, by contrast, lowered several inches as he said, “Because you’re always doing something.”

I sniffed and turned my nose up. “Well, it wasn’t me.”

“Actually,” cut in Osa. “It was.”

“What are we talking about? And aren’t you the messenger that gave Mal that crystal from his brother?”

“Yes, I am. My name is Osa.” Her face finally registered what Reginald had said, and she gaped at me. “Wait—that Tannith guy is your brother?”

I glared at Reginald then said, “We’re going to table that topic for now because seriously—what is going on? Why are you here with us? Shouldn’t you be . . . messager-ing?”

She laughed at that. “Messanger-ing? It’s funny you should bring that up since it’s your fault that my former profession is all but obsolete.
