I’m taken aback for a second seeing my murderer in front of me again. He is the reason I’m dead. He is the reason I am now a demon in Hell. Everything that has happened to me is his fault.

He whimpers when he sees me standing in front of him. Lucifer releases my hand and waves the other demons in the room away. They leave without a word, dropping whatever torture devices they were using to the ground with a clatter.

I barely notice they have left the room because all I see is my killer’s face. My eyes scan him to see how damaged his body is. It’s covered in cuts, bruises, and burns, and there are even a few tools sticking out of wounds in his arms and legs.

Lucifer walks toward him and stands beside him. “Akari, this is Spencer Smith. I believe you remember him, though.” Another whimper comes from Spencer when Lucifer mentions his name.

“Hello, beautiful,” I hear in my head. I’m not sure whether he actually said it or if it’s a false memory, but it’s enough to send a wave of anger through my body.

All I can manage is a “yes.” I feel sick to my stomach at seeing him. Lucifer watches me again, waiting for me to move or to say something, but I’m stuck in place staring at Spencer. “May I have a moment alone with him?” I ask.

“Certainly, I’ll be right outside.” He leaves us alone in the cave.

“Do you remember me?” I ask after I’m sure Lucifer has left. There is no answer from Spencer, just fear in his eyes.

“Do. You. Remember. Me?” I ask through clenched teeth.

“Y-yes,” he stammers, nodding.

I pick up a dagger from the ground at my feet. I feel the weight of the steel in my hand—I like the way it feels. I like that even in the heat of Hell, the metal is somehow cool to the touch. The hilt is black with wings etched into it, and the dagger itself is gorgeous, its wavy blade made of Damascus steel. I run my finger down the blade, feeling it bite into my skin. Blood drips down my finger, and I smile at the sight.

A whimper from in front of me pulls me away from the blade in my hand. “What’s wrong? Afraid I’ll carve you up like you did me?” I ask, tightening my grip on my newfound weapon.

“Please, don’t hurt me,” he says, tears streaming down his pathetic face.

“Are you kidding me?” I shout at him. “You fucking killed me, and my death was not at all a fast one. Do you seriously think you deserve mercy?” I take a step closer to where he is tied up. With the quickness of a rattlesnake, I cut him loose, and he drops to the floor.

He lands on his hands and knees, screaming out in pain at the items still lodged in his body. I step forward, wrapping my hand on the hilt of a knife in his leg and yank it free.
