The Deep World

The Marauder hid in the darkness near the sharp line between light and blackness. Free to slither around on the sandy surface, nearly undetected as a Burmese python, the Ravager could hear the conversation between the Defender and the Guardian.

While he couldn’t see into the light because the brightness caused him pain, the Marauder remained still and listened.

“Humans share a collective mind,” the Defender told a Guardian. “A hive mind, if you will, in which they share experiences in other worlds. We call them Deep World because they are rooted deep in the unconscious mind. But they are there and real. In this Deep World, primal forces battle for supremacy.”

The Marauder allowed the voice of the Guardian to reverberate through his mind. It was the voice of a teenage boy.

The voice was familiar. Someone he knew in the physical world.

As the Defender female warrior stopped talking because the Guardian had begun to wake and return to the physical world, the Marauder suddenly recalled to who that voice belonged.

It was the voice of David Levitan—the teenage son of his law partner Lawrence.

The Marauder, also known as Sy Rogen in the waking world, now knew what he had to do about young David. The Deep World would soon have one less Guardian to protect it.
