Chapter 14
âSo where are we going?â asked Clarissa, throwing her shawl around her as Ross walked out of the office. It was late in the morning, but he had let her get an hour or two of sleep, albeit in a chair, her head tipped back and snoring loudly. She had been out most of the night with the professor, and then sheâd come back with information, giving names of groups and some other sketchy information about the symbols. Ross had phoned people heâd used on a previous occasion. He knew his limits on a computer, his limits on searches, what he could go into and find, especially with the investigation running as well. He would be shuffling bits of paper here and there, making sure everything was dotted and crossed. Invariably, the time to do a truly deep internet search and find all these names would be lost on him. For this reason, heâd picked up the phone and called in some people Macleod probably wouldâve called geeks. Techies, the polite term.
âYouâve got your car keys?â asked Ross.
âI donât think Iâm fit for driving.â
âIâll drive then,â said Ross.
Clarissa stared at him. âNo. Not my car, you donât. Iâll keep the hood down. Weâll be fine. Air will keep me awake.â
Two minutes later, the pair were spinning out of the Inverness Stationâs car park in the small green sports car that Clarissa so loved. Ross indicated a right straight out of the car park, heading off towards the industrial estate on the edge of town. Among the large warehouses, there was a smaller section of units with only a few varied companies there, each one operating on a low level. But the one he was taking her to didnât need vast office space or storage space because everything was done from a small hub of computers.
As Clarissa parked the car, Ross stepped out and told her to follow him up to a rather bland, brown front door. As he approached, he looked up to see the CCTV looking down and a voice said, âHello, Alan Ross.â The door then swung open on its own and Clarissa followed Ross through into a rather drab corridor. He passed up it, took a left through another rather boring door, and into a room filled with desks and screens.
âMr Ross, I think weâve got something for you.â
Clarissa looked at the man speaking. He had a beard and glasses and yet he couldnât have been over the age of twenty-seven. Clarissa thought that look went out with the seventies. Another young man was clean-shaven, but she noticed a number of items on his desk. Gimmicks, possibly, or were they just characters from different films, those modern films she didnât tend to watch? Superheroes, was it?
Clarissa shook her head but followed Ross as he made for the man who gave them the original greeting. Alan reached forward and put a hand out towards the man as he looked at Clarissa.
âThis is Isaac. Isaac Matthews. He does with a computer what I canât do.
