CHAPTER 20
âââ
JACK OCCUPIED MY hotel room, so I returned to Amyâs house. Things between Amy and I had warmed up, but I stepped carefully and tried to be a better guest. Justinâs condo had me dreaming of a place of my own, and Portlandâs sunny, mosquito-free summer seduced me daily. Iâd never had a place of my own.
I ate an edible and smoked some weed before getting into Ellenâs little car so I wouldnât throw up on her leather interiors. âIs that mid-century on the hill still available?â I gripped the handle above my door as we wound up a road at twenty miles per hour over the speed limit. âIâve had fantasies about restoring the place.â
She laughed. âNot a chance, honey. That house sold for cash the same day I showed it to you. Youâll have to move fast on anything you like. And as I told you with the condo, I donât believe in the theory of âmeant to be.â If you like something, we need to make it happen.â
âMake it happen?â I asked. âWhat does that mean?â
We climbed a narrow road with a velvety fern wall on one side and a sheer drop into the ravine on another. I hoped sheâd say something like, âKill your competitors,â and make my life easy.
âIt means bid fast and high, cash if possible, and donât be a pain in the ass during inspections.â
I thought about what the creepy room in Amyâs house could have contained and decided I wouldnât take Ellen's advice at my home inspection.
âIt feels like Southwest Portland is one ravine after another,â I said. âDo they have names?
âMost of them have trails below. Ask Amy for names. Sheâs probably been in everyone.â
I laughed. âI thought Amy went missing this week, but she was just full moon hiking on Mt. Hood.â
âMissing. Why would Amy go missing?â
I gripped the handle over the window while she whirled up the curves. âDidnât you hear? Amos Patenaude was murdered.â
She kept her eyes on the road. I wished Iâd saved the conversation for lunch to see her eyes, but thankfully, she kept them on the road.
âI thought that fire was accidental.â The wheels screeched around a hairpin turn, and she swerved to avoid hitting a man and his hound. âWhy the hell would you walk your dog on this road?â
âIt was arson,â I said.
âHow do you know so much about it?â she asked.
âI ran into Amos in the park on the day he died. I was the last one to see him alive. Well, except for the murderer,â I added. âDid you know Amos?â
âI know the property. Amos's son called and asked me to price it not too long ago,â she said. âOf course, I told him I would do no such thing until he was the owner.â
âYou know everyone,â I said. âIt was a sweet house.â
âThis may sound macabre, but the fire improved the lot. Builders donât like the red tape and costs of tearing an old house down.â
âThe man I met would never have allowed that,â I said.
