He was running across the track as fast as he could, unable to look at the watch on his wrist tracking his progress.
Even if, by some miracle, he wasnât able to beat his last record, then he still hoped that he could maintain the last one.
He could feel the blood pumping beneath his skin. There was an extra weightiness to the veins that he knew was in his head.
Heâd done seventeen laps around the track. He could slow down, but he didnât dare. The moment he did, his heart would start pounding like a jackhammer.
He saw that the surrounding area was empty. There was nobody to watch him run. But it allowed him to slip into his regular fantasy, imagining him sprinting before an adoring public, his name on everybodyâs lips.
It wouldnât be long before he was getting everything he wanted. And the best part was it wasnât a dream heâd had to hold out for decades on end. It was all falling into place quite quickly.
He kept racing, hoping that he could make it to an even twenty before he finally stopped for a break.
Now, he could feel his heart pounding loudly. And not just pounding, but twisting⦠as though an invisible hand had reached inside his chest and was trying to dislodge his heart.
Probably just a stitch, he thought to himself, deciding to ignore it.
But the twisting sensation grew, tearing at his insides and he found himself stumbling slightly as the pain started to overwhelm him.
He began gulping air, thinking maybe it was time to stopâ¦
â¦But no air was entering his lungs.
He couldnât breathe.
He gulped and tried to inhale, trying to suck in the air around him, but none of it was entering his body. And whatâs more, he was beginning to feel the absence of oxygen. His face turned purple and he clawed at his shirt, leaving deep tears around the collar.
He tried to call out for somebody to help him. But he remembered coming here alone. Heâd specifically come to the track at this time because he knew nobody would bother him.
Not that it stopped him from making wordless gasps as he fell to his knees.
He could feel the fight going out of him. His last thoughts were of the dream that kept him alive for so longâ¦
â¦Until it no longer did.
