Amira drove the quarter mile to the Marina and parked. I retrieved my headlamp from my dry bag, took out a flashlight for Amira and retrieved the keys for the dinghy. We headed down to the dock.
âYou see those lights over there?â We were at the end of the dock, looking out toward the Atlantic and the mast and boat lights in the large bay. I had to get a little closer to Amira, standing behind her with my right arm gently resting on her right shoulder. She smelled of lemon grass and coconut. Earthy, exotic and natural. My arm touched her cheek as I pointed to the lightâs of Donnyâs catamaran. âThatâs Donnyâs boat â Donny who murdered Tamara. Almost directly to the left, towards the shore, is the pier and the house where I was earlier tonight. I presume that most of the lights will be off now, except for a few night lights.â
I stepped back and grabbed the dinghy painter which was attached to a dock-cleat and drew it in alongside the pier. I handed the painter off to Amira to hold and jumped in then sat down and started the outboard. Once Iâd grabbed hold of the dock, I motioned with my head for her to step into the dinghy and sit opposite me.
We began our slow ride toward Donnyâs catamaran, past the house where the murder had taken place and on to Corona Del Mar. Amira was looking around as we slowly made our way across the bay, with much of her attention focused on the house and the pier. I gently tapped her knee and pointed out the catamaran as we passed between it and the end of the pier. I looked at Amira in the moonlight and could tell she was very much alert, her head on a swivel, taking it all in.
There were no cabin lights on in the catamaran, which was no surprise. It was late and most yachties Donnyâs age retired to bed early. My engine was loud as we motored in the quietness of the late night and Amira was composed just taking it all in like a good investigator would.
I tapped her gently on the knee again and pointed out the lights of the Corona Del Mar. She nodded her comprehension. The yacht was lit up so it was easy to point out where we were going. As we approached, Olivia stepped up from the cockpit and made her way to the beam of the boat. She was our welcoming committee, smiling and waving.
I motored to within five feet of the ladder and then cut the engine for us to coast in. I grabbed the ladder with one hand and held out my other hand for Amira to steady herself as she stood up and grasped the ladder to board. I noticed Amiraâs feminine form in the pantsuit as she climbed up the ladder. I grabbed the painter and followed her shaking my head. Amira was the first woman I had properly noticed since I started dating my wife.
