On Wednesday, 30 August 1780, a report on Huck’s Defeat appeared in the Pennsylvania Gazette and Weekly Advertiser under the headline “Extract of a letter dated at Hillsborough, North-Carolina, July 23, 1780.” The information in this article was taken almost verbatim from Major Thomas Blount’s 23 July letter to North Carolina Governor Abner Nash, and described the patriot victories at Ramsour’s Mill, Williamson’s Plantation and Colson’s Mill:

A second attack was made on a party of about 130 Tories, commanded by col. Ferguson, a noted Tory from the northward, and 70 Light horse of Cathcart’s legion, commanded by a Captain Hook, on the 12 instant, by a party of 80 or 90 militia, under the command of Col Neale, the surprize was compleat, Ferguson, Hook, a Lieutenant and seven others were killed on the ground, and a Major, two Lieutenants, and 27 taken, many of whom are since dead of their wounds, the remainder were dispersed, some accoutrements for Light horse, and a number of horses were also taken—of the exact number we have not certain accounts—our loss was only one man wounded.570
