âNo?â Elijahâs voice trembled as he repeated my answer.
I pushed to my feet and crossed the room until I stood directly in front of him. Reaching out, I pried the empty glass from his hand and set it on the dresser behind him. âNo.â
He titled his head back and his dark blue eyes studied me intently for a few brief seconds. âIt looked likeââ
I set my hand to his chest, halting his words. His gaze flicked down to where my palm rested against his beating heart. âI know what it looked like and Iâm sorry for that.â
âYou shouldnât have to apologize,â he rasped, his gaze darting abruptly away. âI fucking hate it that Iâm so jealous.â I could tell the admission cost him. While Iâd disappointed him, he was even more disappointed with himself right now.
âHey.â I gripped his t-shirt in my fist, pulling his attention back to me. âLook at me.â
He blew out a breath, and I watched as a bevy of emotions flashed through his eyes. Indecision, trepidation, and finally determination. âIâm such an idiot.â He shook his head and eased out of my grip. He stepped around me and moved to the other side of the room, putting several feet of distance between us.
âWill you let me explain?â I asked, turning around to face him.
âLike I said before, you shouldnât have to. After all, itâs not like you were cheating on me or anything by kissing her.â
âFuck you,â I huffed, frustrated by the venom of his words.
True, Elijah and I werenât a couple in the traditional sense of the word, but we were together in all of the ways that truly mattered. In the weeks weâd been holed up here, Iâd spent more time with him than Iâd spent with anyone in my entire adult life, save my former teammates. From sunup to sundown, we were each otherâs constant companions. And when the sun went down and he snuck across the hall to my bedroom, I was closer to him than Iâd been to anyone. Ever.
And if that didnât mean something, I didnât know what did.
Still, as angry as I was over the way heâd so blithely dismissed what had grown between us this past month, I couldnât deny he also had a point. His smile might be the first thing I pictured when I woke up in the morning, but weâd never actually discussed what any of this meant outside the confines of these four walls. In fact, if I thought back over all the weeks weâd been hanging out together, it was fairly obvious weâd actively avoided it.
âSit down.â I pointed to the edge of his bed. His eyelids became narrow slits of distrust while his lips flattened into a hard line, but he nonetheless obeyed the directive. When he folded his fingers together and looked up at me with an imperious lift of his right eyebrow, I continued. âNow Iâm going to say some things, and youâre going to sit there and listen. And when Iâm done, I donât want to hear another word about it.
