They sat in the car, watching the sleet turn to icy water as it slid down the windscreen.

“I think he helped us as much as he could. I sense Steve is a valued employee. This recent behaviour has come from out of the blue as far as his boss is concerned.”

“I agree.” Dermot nodded. “But often, when a crime like child neglect is uncovered, it’s the tip of the iceberg. You find that people capable of illegal behaviour will not just be committing one crime but several.”

“Yes, that’s true. It’s fairly clear that Fleetwood is getting money from somewhere other than his pay packet. But there’s no evidence of it going through his bank accounts.”

“No, maybe we’re talking about cash transactions. But we didn’t find anything at the house when we searched.”

Sharon shifted round in her seat. “Perhaps the burglars found it! They made off with the cash!”

“It’s possible, but I don’t think I’d hide the money at home, not if other members of the family didn’t know I was involved in illegal activities. We found no trace of drugs either.”

“Do you think Jackson knows anything about this?”

The muscles around Dermot’s mouth tightened. “I don’t think so, but we should really be questioning him about it.”

“The DCS is babysitting him right now at the station. He may already be asking those questions.”

“We don’t have much time before we’re going to have to undermine the lad’s faith in his parents even further, perhaps fundamentally.”

“Until then, let’s get hold of this Harry Price chap and see if we can’t get the information we need from him instead.”
