WHEN ELDEN ARRIVED with the second tray of the day, the sun was nearly set, and I was exhausted. I’d never known that inactivity could be so tiring.

“Hello, Elden,” I said, approaching the small table where he had placed the tray. “The stew smells delicious. Do you cook?”

The large man shrugged and shook his head, his right eyebrow tugging upward. I wasn’t sure how to interpret this.

“I’m a terrible cook myself,” I said, “although I have a friend who’s been trying to teach me.” I pushed on with a smile. “She’s very patient.”

This time it was the corner of Elen’s mouth that twitched upward. Silently, he reached into the pocket of his smock and pulled something out. At first the object was shrouded in his large hand, but he released it to the corner of the tray, and I realized that it was a polished wooden sphere, created from the joining of many small pieces.

“What is it?”

He pointed, touching one finger gently to a segment of the ball. Looking closely, I saw that the segment he had touched was a lighter-colored wood than the rest.

“Is it...a puzzle?”

Elden nodded.

“Thank you,” I said sincerely, “this will give me something to do while I wait.”

He frowned slightly, then gathered the mid-day tray and turned toward the door, his left foot scuffing against the floorboards as he walked. I barely noticed the scent of magic as the door closed; I’d shifted my attention to the puzzle ball.
