“Wow,” I say. “Grandpa was mad.”

“Wait, wait, wait.” Frankie rubs her forehead and squeezes her eyes tight. “Just wait one second! Dad and Uncle Randy have known all this time that Grandpa was looking for the Queen Anne’s Revenge?”

“What makes you say that?”

She points to the paper and reads: “… my sons have promised they will carry on this quest…”

My stomach feels tight and an awful sour taste rises up in my throat. I shake my head. “No way. No way! That would mean Dad has been lying to us about everything? He would never do that.” But the proof is in my hand. It’s Grandpa’s handwriting. It’s stuff only he knew. And obviously Throop too.

“Not to mention they clearly never promised Grandpa that,” Frankie says. “Or they went back on their promise.”

I kick a stone down the street. It bounces a long distance and hits a telephone pole. “I’m so mad at Dad right now. This whole time he’s been pretending he doesn’t believe in Grandpa’s treasure hunt at all? Why, Frankie? Why would he lie to us?” Tears sting my eyes.

Frankie gently scratches my shoulder. “If Grandpa actually wrote this and it’s all true, I’m sure Dad had a good reason to not tell us everything, Sav. Don’t cry.”

“Do you think Mom knows the truth too?”

Frankie shrugs. “I guess it’s possible.”

I carry my board and scuff my feet on the sandy street as we walk. “Are we going to ask him about this?” I sniff.

Frankie sighs. “I don’t know. What do you think?”

“I think our parents betrayed us.”

“I’m not sure we should take it that far. There has to be a reason.”

I stuff the letter back into the envelope, fold it up a bunch of times, and shove it into my back pocket. “I’m asking Dad the second we get home. We have to solve this once and for all.” I drop my skateboard to the ground and race off to the house. Frankie jogs behind me but I beat her to the porch. Uncle Randy and Aunt Della’s car is already out front, which means I have to either bring this up in front of everyone or wait until later. But when I run up the front steps, I can hear arguing inside the house. I put my finger to my lips to warn Frankie. Together we open the door a crack and listen.

Mom’s angry voice is the first one we hear. “That man paid you off, Randy. Twice! It was a bribe. Why would you do that?”

“What choice did I have, Anne?”

“You could fight him, like we are,” my dad says.

“This is our livelihood we’re talking about. I can’t just go out and teach like you. I’m a fisherman, a boat captain, Jack. This is what I do. I have to have a functional boat! Throop wanted me to butt out, so I’m out.”

“So just like that!” Mom says. “Just like that you hang the rest of your family out to dry?”

“It’s not that simple, Anne,” Aunt Della says.
