Nikki knew that her behaviour was borderlining on stalker territory and that if Collins or Liv could see her right now, they’d probably throw the book at her, followed by the bookshelf. But having found out everything she had, she could not in good conscience stand by and do nothing. She needed to see it through to the end.

She watched as the young PA, Tracy, left the office to go on a coffee break. She could see from a distance how the young woman’s posture changed as soon as she exited through the doors, like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. Clearly, that place had done no end of damage to her.

She watched as the woman walked down towards the coffee shop, and Nikki quickly rushed to keep up.

“Tracy?” she called out. The young woman turned at the sound of the familiar voice, but as soon as she laid eyes on the detective sergeant, she immediately whipped around and turned in the other direction.

“Go away,” the PA replied in a voice that made her sound much younger than her age, but the heels she wore only allowed her to pick up so much pace.

“I wondered if we could talk,” Nikki offered, trying to get in front of her.

“You come anywhere near me, and I’ll scream,” Tracy replied, looking over her shoulder to see if anyone was following her.

Nikki held up her hands in supposed defeat. “Look, I’m not trying to make life difficult for you! I know what happened!”

That sentence had the desired effect, and it stopped the young woman in her tracks.

Taking advantage of her stunned reaction, Nikki moved forward. “And I am so sorry that I am only hearing about this now. Believe me, if I’d known about it, the bastard would be rotting in a jail cell waiting for chemical castration.”

“What difference does it make now?” Tracy asked, sounding defeatist. “Harry’s dead. It’s not the closure I was after, but at least I can take some comfort in knowing that he’s not going to be trying that crap with anyone else.”

The words stung the sergeant. How many women had been failed by a corrupt system? “Look, I’m not here to talk about his death. Between you and me, we’re going through the motions. The bastard got what he deserved. I’m here to talk about what happened with you. We let you down, there’s no two ways about it. But I want to talk about how we can prevent more incidents like this in the future. Just five minutes of your time, that’s all I ask. And afterwards, you never have to see me again. Please?”

Tracy looked at the police officer, who seemed to be genuine enough. Maybe she’d spent so much time being around backstabbing, self-serving people, she’d forgotten what sincerity looked like.

“Okay,” she finally decided, to Nikki’s visible relief. “Let’s go and get a coffee.”
