Chapter twenty-eight

Elianna

He called me Elianna. It had been days since I told him my first name, and what I would prefer to be called, but he refused to acknowledge it. He had barely spoken to me at all, but if he was forced to, he would still refer to me as "Solus." I was grateful he never seemed to notice how much it bothered me. I loathed my last name, it represented everything the queen punished me for my entire existence. My father always said that while I could not properly bear his last name, I would always be a Valderre.

The way his voice cracked when he screamed my name…it sounded like he was concerned. Worried, even. But why? Why would he be worried about someone he just planned to kill? Was it because he needed me to die at the right moment? He didn’t want me to die before I gave up the secrets of Velyra? Which I would never do.

I had so many questions.

I cleared my throat. “Since we are lost–”

“We aren’t lost,” he cut me off. “We have just taken a few accidental detours.”

I arched a brow and pursed my lips. “Riiiight, well these few 'accidental detours' have seemed to cost us daylight, maybe even days of it. So, why don’t we just follow the stream? Most streams lead to at least a body of water.”

He sighed. “Rivers, Solus. Rivers lead to bodies of water. Not streams. This could be left over from rainfall for all we know.”

There’s that name again. “Well, it's the only lead we have, and I'm going to go with that. Also, it hasn't even rained.” I shot forward.

He went to open his mouth, likely to scold me for the millionth time today. “Look…” I pushed my fingers lightly into his chest, making eye contact. “I am following the way of the stream pointed north.” I gestured to the moss. “So you can relax now.”

“I don’t relax.”

“No shit.”

He let out a grunt as I proceeded forward again. “What I mean is, I won’t be relaxing until we are back in Ellecaster and I have a better idea of what to do with you.”

What the? Did he no longer plan to kill me?

He clearly could sense where my thoughts were going and changed the subject, “Come on, we will need to make camp within the next couple of hours. I'm not trying to run into another massive creature, so you better keep that loud mouth of yours shut.”

I snickered. “Yes, sir!” I called out mockingly.

He peeked back at me, looking annoyed per usual, and then began his trek down the small hill, following the stream.
