Chapter 14
I was almost sorry to go away with Patrick this time. The right place to be was at the Murraysâ just now. That was a cruel thing Faye had said, that business about some woman who had had made over and worn her deceased husbandâs clothes. But Kitty had asked for it. The idea of prattling about mourning and so on at a time like this! I wanted to talk with Faye, find out more about everything.
When Rob followed us out to the car, I was glad because he wanted to detain us. He spoke first about Casey again. He had known that Casey kept a good deal of money about. Was it really possible that he might have been shot by a burglar?
âThat would be a load off my mind,â he said. âHorrible as it is. Iâd like to forget about our argument. It isnât going to be easy the rest of my life to keep thinking about a man killing himself because I wanted to enter a horse for the Derby, and he didnât.â
Patrick said, âRob, where was Faye last night? After you left Caseyâs the first time and went to your office in the barn to telephone? To keep from using the party line, you said.â
Robâs eyes had narrowed.
âFaye was at the house.â
âThatâs good,â Patrick said.
âFaye never left the house till she joined me at the office.â
âThatâs very good,â Patrick said. âThe cabin not being locked just at that time â¦â
âYou heard me,â Rob said. âFaye did not leave the house. The first time she went to Caseyâs cabin she went with us, all of us together.â
âDonât get excited, Rob.â
âThe way you spoke â¦â
Patrick went on talking as if he had not noticed Robâs rising anger.
âRob, it seems to be the custom in the country here for the servants to live out. In quarters specially provided for them. Thatâs very nice indeed, but there will be only your word and Fayeâs to prove what you say.â¦â
âWho the hellâs going to say anything?â
âWhy not?â
âThey both committed suicide, Pat. Itâs been decided. Iâm willing to let it rest at that. If Iâm willing, whatâs it to you?â
âIâd like to do a friend a favor, Rob.â
âWhat friend?â
âYou.â
âI donât need any favors,â Rob said. âI like you, Pat. I like your wife, and Fayeâs just crazy about you both, but if you start digging into this thingâbeing the detective â¦â
âThere is no sense in your thinking all your life long that Casey killed himself because you argued. He did not kill himself. He was murdered.â
Rob glanced down. He stood there, a powerful figure, but uneasy, worried, angry as hell, but willing to let sleeping dogs lie.
âPat, you start probing into this thing and then what? People are going to talk more and more about my daughter. They will say that Guy Adriance shot Casey and robbed his safe in order to get enough money to marry my Alexis. Theyâll say worse than that. Iâm not going to have that, hear? I donât want her name connected with this in any way.
