Chapter Seven

Oh shit. I hadn’t expected anyone to notice me. I sat stone-still on the ledge, hoping they would just go about their business and chalk it up to one of Faust’s weird happenings.

Instead, Sarah gazed at me. “It looks like a gargoyle. Poor little thing. I wonder if it somehow got lost.”

Timothy’s brow furrowed. “Are you sure it’s a gargoyle? If it’s a demon, it could hurt us.”

Sarah smiled again and put down her basket. “Oh yes, it is a gargoyle. My mum used to feed the gargoyles when we lived behind the church in Eschbach. He’s definitely one.” She took a few steps towards me. “Come here, little one. We won’t hurt you.”

I hesitated. Timothy stood by Sarah, his fists clenched in a promise of pain if I tried to harm her. I wouldn’t have normally come down until the Humans had passed, but now that they saw me, I couldn’t stay up here in the cold wind forever. It made sense that they thought I was a roof guardian though, since even Faust mistook me for a gargoyle. Gargoyles were known as guardians and sentries. They were supposed to frighten away the Christian demons, only they didn’t really. I mean, a greater demon like Meep had no problem with them, and looking around, I could see that there were no local gargoyles near Faust’s home. No doubt they sensed a bigger predator.

People often mistake gargoyles for stonework, and they wouldn’t be wrong. Gargoyles’ skin is as hard as stone, and even feels like it. I had to admit my new size and body left me looking like a rooftop guardian. But maybe I could use that to my advantage.

I flew down to the couple and tried to smile in reassurance, only I suspect it looked like I was snarling. “I’m sorry to disturb you,” I said. “I was hungry and looking for the kitchen.”

“You speak!” Timothy jumped back, his eyes wide.

Sarah laughed. “Of course he speaks, He’s a guardian.”

“But why would he be here in this cursed place?” Timothy glared at me.

“Faust brought me here against my will.” I figured the truth would work. “You can call me Tuz. I wish you both no ill.”

Sarah knelt down and pulled out a bread crust from what I had assumed was an empty basket. “I was saving the crust for the birds, but you do look hungry. Would you like it, Master Tuz?”

Normally, I’d be insulted by the leftover, but circumstances change. I nodded. “Thank you, Miss Sarah. You are most generous.” I gently plucked the bread crust from her fingers with my claws and took a bite of the bread.

My mouth flooded with the most amazing sensation. Apparently, my taste buds were heightened here, and I gratefully chewed the bread, relishing the taste. Who would’ve thought simple bread would taste so good? I quickly gobbled it down.

“Whoa, Tuz! You must be starving.” Timothy knelt down beside me, presumably to get a closer look. “When did you eat last?”

I shook my head.
