Chapter 15

He Has Always Loved You

After I got another big hug from Zach and my parents — what can I say? We’re a hugging family — they departed for the cabin again with Penny. Sayonara was still with Ivana.

Left with my thoughts, and with nearly two hours before I needed to drive into town, I descended the stairs to my quarters.

As I settled myself at my dining room table, I kept pondering what was happening.

How had my life come to this? My cousin arrested for murder? His bride crying in my parlor? Was she crying because her current husband had been arrested? Or because her previous boyfriend and/or stalker had been killed? Or both?

I didn’t believe for one minute that Manny was the murderer, so that meant I needed to come up with a list of possible suspects. For this list, I was going old school. Pulling out my favorite purple pen and a notebook with a fancy embossed dragon on the front, I sank onto my couch and crossed my legs.

First, I wrote the names of Havel and Boris, because I happened to agree with Ivana and because murders often happened in moments of passion and rage by people who know you best, even those who love you.

Had Ivana loved Anton at one time? Had she moved on and he couldn’t deal with it? Was he risking her marriage to Manny, so she’d done him in? Was she strong enough to kill a man? And how could she have gotten into town when she didn’t drive?

Unlikely. Highly unlikely.

There were also the other Czechs in the Inn — the matchmakers. What did I know about them, really? Just what they’d told me. Manny and Ivana hadn’t contradicted what they’d said, but they also hadn’t confirmed because I hadn’t asked.

I wrote myself a note to ask Ivana for more information on them.

I wrote down Martha’s name, and drew a line through it. She had nothing to do with this situation, and neither did my actors, including her son, Xavier. At least none that I knew of.

I also wrote down the American couple, the Smiths, and drew a line through them.

This was an act of passion in the moment. That needed a connection to the victim.

Who got angry enough at Anton to hit him with a blunt object and then use a tie to strangle him to death? A hideous stolen tie that belonged to my cousin?

With a sigh, I picked up my phone and dialed my brother’s cell phone.

Paul answered on the third ring. “Hi, Sis. What’s up?” He sounded distracted.

“Can you get more information about the Czech guys who came to town with Anton?”

There was a pause. “Hello to you, too.”

“Sorry. Hi, Paul. I’ve just been coming up with a list of possible suspects and they’re the top ones on my list.”

“I already requested the records on Havel and Boris,” he said matter-of-factly. “And all I know at this point is that they apparently have a talent for computers.”

“Of course, you have,” I said with a laugh.
