CHAPTER 28

When the trio arrived, Yuri instructed Poe to scout their surroundings.

“You are not in charge here, Elf,” Shilo snapped, holding her battle axe.

Yuri not wanting to argue, yielded to the Amazon. “Fine. What say you?”

She sneered at Yuri, acknowledging the reasonableness of his suggestion. “I never said your suggestion was not valid, only don’t assume your position with us.”

“I find that fair,” Poe chimed in.

Yuri stared back at the pair, his anger simmering beneath the surface, but he held his composure. “Understood, Amazon.”

Poe hesitated, looking at Shilo. “Should I patrol, Shilo?”

“Only if you want to, Poe.”

Poe took the cue. “I won’t be long,” Poe promised before running off.

As they waited, Yuri inspected the path Poe took. He was impressed that the Pumpkin made no sound as he ran off; even the dead leaves remained undamaged.

Shilo sat on a protruding tree root and listened for any movement on the ground or in the sky, but she heard nothing. She glanced at Yuri, who was standing with his eyes shut and his head pointed upward. “Elf, do you hear anything?”

Yuri never looked at her. “So you discovered there are no animals.”

“Not even insects. How is that possible?”

“Shouldn’t your Amazon training tell you why?”

Shilo rolled her eyes at the pompous Elf. “I should have realized I couldn’t have a normal conversation with you.” Only she knew he was correct. In her younger years, one of the first things they taught her was to be in tune with nature. She could detect the hum of any bee, the heartbeat of a beast, miles away, and the distinctive flapping of a bird’s wings.

“I’ll tell you this. I can’t sense anyone in the town.”

“Perhaps you’re not close enough?” Shilo suggested.

Yuri ignored her rude comment.

“Are you even sure the ship is headed this way?” Shilo inquired, her eyes scanning the area.

“As sure as you’re from the Knuckle Clan,” Yuri replied.

Shilo snapped her neck to face him and clenched the handle of her axe. “What do you know of my clan?” she hissed.

"To be honest, I had my doubts. The Knuckle clan is famous not only for their vigorous physique, exceptional fighting skills, and masterful weapons crafting, but also for their luscious black hair that rivals all, their enchanting qualities, and not to mention their unwavering statue-like stance."

“This is why men see the end of our blades. Because they frame us as such.”

“I assure you, I do not—frame you, as such. I was talking about your family. You on the other hand, with your mutated hair and underdeveloped form must be a mark on your family's esteemed lineage.”

Shilo clenched her teeth, ready to strike her blade into Yuri’s chest in response to the insult that she had to endure most of her life until her mother banished her. However, their actions had to pause when a colossal shadow crossed over them. They both looked up and witnessed a ship gliding over the treetops, passing them like an eclipse, before plunging to the ground and exploding. The resulting shockwave rippled through the trees, heading directly toward them.
