Chase

Chapter 16

Raoul gazed at Larke as she emerged from the changing room

wearing the hemmed lavender silk dress. Unlike her other

clothes, her breasts were supported, and the low bodice gave a

tantalizing impression. Madam Solenne had provided a light brown wig

that curled around Larke’s shoulders and looked as natural as her own

hair. The ladies had darkened her brows and given her eyes a smoky

gray highlight. She was ravishing.

He paid Madam Solenne and thanked her and the women who

had helped them. Then, before leaving, he arranged to have Larke’s new

clothes brought to them in the morning. Raoul pulled up the black hood

of Larke's cloak and adjusted it before they left.

“It’s snowing,” he said. He offered his arm, and she took it.

The cold air hit them as they left. No soldiers were about. A man

with a tall pole and a flame on one end walked between street lamps,

starting to close. Stables had shut their doors.

“I’ve moved us to Hôtel Charbonneau. We will dine there

tonight.”

“Marcellia told me about that hôtel. Her father is a chef there.”

Raoul smiled and patted her hand. They walked for several

blocks and turned a corner, coming out on one of the main roads in the

city.

Raoul stopped and backed up into the shadows. Soldiers led

Shadow, Daisy, and Belle from the stable where he’d moved them. A

lieutenant emerged along with two other men from the hôtel’s lobby.

They were too far to hear what was said, but Raoul surmised by the

lieutenant’s signals that his men were to fan out, looking for them. And

not just Larke. He believed they searched for him as well.

Larke no longer held his arm, and he grabbed her hand. As soon

as the buildings hid them, he broke into a run, pulling Larke after him.

Hôtel Charbonneau was in the newer section of Terrel, and a large park

was close by. Tall trees and evergreen bushes dotted the darkening

landscape. He ran through, but the falling snow left their prints behind.

He crossed into a lane that led toward the northern bluffs. Several large

estates rose against the hills.

For a moment, he stopped, bending with both hands on his knees

to catch his breath. Then, he looked toward Larke to see her holding her

stomach while slightly bent. He grabbed her hand again, and they began

to jog, heading toward one of the estates.

They climbed the hill in a zigzag, following the cobblestone

lane. Passing one estate and then another until they came to the one

Raoul knew.

The gate remained open. He slowed. They were both winded.

Still, he had to hurry.

He bypassed the main entry, heading for the side. The lay of the

building was against the bluff at it’s back, the top floor adjacent to the

land that spread out from the summit. The side door on the ground floor

wasn’t lit, and shrubs hid it from view.

“Remain here,” he said, leaving Larke by the tower wall. When

he reached the door, he pounded on the wooden entrance. He turned,

glanced at Larke, and then, turned back. He was about to knock again

when the door opened. An older woman dressed as a cook stood before

him.

“I must speak with Lord Paquinn at once.
