Greedy

Cateline woke, clawing at the bits for relief. Air flowed into her lungs like she'd never witnessed before. It was more than her body waking her; no—it was magical life flowing into her... through her. Immediately, tears spilled from her eyes as agony overwhelmed her mind, body, and soul. Bit by bit, she recalled that terrible dream. Twisting around, she followed the length of a chain and found she was tied down to a shallow pool in nothing more than a white slip, the heart-shaped neckline covered in moist, dark blood.

And her arm—the one that had been broken and barely healed—was fine. Bruised, and riddled with bloody dots, but fine.

Her gown stuck to her skin as she pushed herself to sit upright, yanking at the metal links that bound her to the basin. Cateline looked all around, seeing nothing other than a few candles illuminating the dark room. When she looked back down at her arms, pinprick-sized incisions followed the length of her veins.

Cateline tried to reach a hand over to rub them, to see how deep they went, but the links kept her arms separated. She tugged and tugged, but they weren't coming loose.

Caius... Are you with me?

Silence.

It was so loud it made her sob, lips trembling as she pulled her legs to her chest. When she looked down at the pool of water, it was tinted red like blood. Just enough to be noticeable, even in the dark.

She clenched her hands into a fist when the door opened, a tall, slender figure standing in the stark light.

“Welcome back,” came that disgusting voice. “I hope a few days' rest served your mind well.”

Cateline scowled, blood draining from her face. “How many days?”

A low chuckle rumbled from his chest. “You died four days ago.” Her chest had never been so tight, mind had never been so numb. She felt as if she'd pass out then and there. “Your magic helped you come back less than a minute after, though...you can thank the sleep to me.”

She jerked toward him, the metal links screaming with the tension. “Fuck you!”

Heryndel was fully coherent now as he stood at the edge of the shallow pool and kneeled with an uninterested smirk carved into his face. “You needed your sleep. After all, resurrecting a kingdom is a tiring thing.”

Her hands fell to the ground at her side, nostrils flaring as she tried to decipher what he was saying. Then, she looked down at the tiny pricks in her arms...realized how badly her head pounded now that the adrenaline was waning...

“What…what did you do?” she stammered, heart thumping loud in her chest. “What did you make me do?”

“I don't have to answer that for you to know,” he said, standing. “Unfortunately, with magic like that, you can't just pick and choose who gets brought back. Have to say, it was really nice seeing the original reigning monarchy crawl from their tombs.”

She snapped back to him and bared her teeth. “Do you realize what you've done?” she snapped.
