Monkey-in-the-Middle

- a tried & true favorite for zippy dogs, small yards and very tired owners -

This is a good way to wear your dog out quickly while you, your dog and a buddy to have lots of fun! All you need is a dog in good condition that really loves playing catch or fetch. You can use any size ball (one slightly larger than a tennis ball specifically made to be safe for dogs is ideal. Choose something your dog can hold comfortably in his mouth without swallowing.)

Find an open space in an enclosed area, and start with a relatively short distance. The idea is for you and your human buddy to throw the ball back and forth to each other, while your high-energy dog races back and forth between you, salivating at the thought of catching the ball if one of you lets it fall. This game wears a dog out quickly! Just make sure your dog gets ample opportunities to catch the ball to keep him interested. Every time the ball flies out of bounds, your dog will likely retrieve it, meaning even less running for you! Of course, you can play this game with any number of people and your dog. Calibrate your throws to how fast your dog can run in order to keep things exciting. If you want your dog to run more, you and your buddy can back away to farther and farther distances. It’s best if your dog actually gets the chance to catch and carry the ball at times. And, to spice things up occasionally, you could also use a football thrown far distances or a soccer, or (dog-proof) beach ball, kicked on the ground.

Just make sure not to overdo it. Playing this game for any period of time at high intensity like this is intended only for healthy and physically fit dogs.
