CHAPTER 13

The moment Naimh’s fingertips brushed against the smooth surface of the crystal, a magical resonance reverberated through the group, as if the very air around them had changed.

The shard emitted a soft, melodious chime that seemed to echo in the very depths of Evelyn’s soul. A subtle enchantment enveloped Naimh, wrapping her in a cocoon of energy.

Her eyes fluttered closed and her body went rigid. The ruined city around them seemed to hold its breath as she recited a cryptic message, her voice soft and distant, as if she were speaking from someplace far away.

“By moon’s wane and starless nights, the city ever lost shall rise. It weaves and turns, the key, the gate, the path untrod, they seek to find what once was lost.”

Evelyn listened, her heart pounding in her chest. Lorcan shifted nervously beside her, his brow furrowed.

“The darkened heart shall hold the sway, as shadows dance and light decays,” Naimh continued, her voice growing more urgent. “But hope remains, a fragile spark, to guide the lost through endless dark.”

The chamber was silent as Naimh’s voice faded away, the last echoes of the prophecy lingering in the air. The magic receded from her, leaving her pale and unsteady on her feet. Lorcan rushed to her side, his blue eyes filled with concern as he steadied her.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

Naimh nodded weakly, leaning against him for support. “I-I think so. It was…” Her gaze met Lorcan’s and he shook his head ever so slightly.

Evelyn exchanged glances with Finn and Aisling.

“Well, that was a bust,” Finn drawled. “If we wanted poetry, we should’ve stayed in Sil Ah’ande.”

But Evelyn wasn’t so sure. They’d hoped Niamh could reveal what the shard was, but had got something entirely different—a warning. She’d had spoken of the lost city, and a key…but also a darkness.

Evelyn looked down at the shard in Finn’s hand, noticing it’d lost its glow—a glow that’d only appeared when Naimh had touched it. Her gaze moved to Lorcan, who’d drawn the girl away from the light.

“Let’s not dismiss the prophecy so quickly, Finn,” Aisling said. “There may be more to it than we realise.”

Finn looked skeptical, but he didn’t voice his doubts. Instead, he turned to Naimh, who had regained some of her composure. “Did you see anything else? Anything useful?”

Naimh shook her head, her expression troubled.

“It doesn’t matter,” Lorcan declared. “You didn’t get what you were hoping for, and this place is out of answers. We should leave.”

“Wait,” Eamon interjected. “We can’t just disregard what the girl said. There must be some meaning to it.”

“Fine,” Finn grumbled, crossing his arms. “So the prophecy mentioned a lost city and a key. But how does that relate to this shard?”

“Perhaps the shard is part of the key she mentioned?” Aisling suggested, her brow furrowing.

Lorcan’s gaze shifted between the group members, concern etched on his face as he held Naimh close.

“Dismissing her words entirely would be foolish,” Eamon went on.

“An Unseelie buying into a twisted prophecy?” Finn drawled, rolling his eyes.
