A DAYTIME NIGHTMARE

At three in the morning, Crow's men began their slow, methodical crawl into the Rebel camp. On the edge of the camp, men silently untied and took the six workhorses used to haul the Reb's supply wagon. One of the camp guards had his throat slit and then was sat down with his back to a tree, as if he were asleep. Just before daybreak, all of the Wolf Pack had returned to their camp and waited.

As the sun began to climb up into the sky, a cry of alarm went up in the Rebel camp. First one man and then another found that the man next to him had been killed. The officer in charge stood in the middle of the camp calling for a report. Two lieutenants rushed up but two shots echoed through the morning air, and the lieutenants fell dead. Pandemonium overtook the camp as men found that some weapons had been taken, or a saddle was missing. The officer in charge quickly formed a protective circle around the camp and waited for the attack that never came.

Crow's men stood grim-faced as they watched the results of their raid. McCauley said quietly to Barley, “It's like Crow told us, they are confused and afraid.”

“I'll tell you one thing,” said Barley, “I'm damned glad Captain Crow is on our side.”

When nothing more had happened by noon, the Rebel commander ordered his men to break camp. With no horses to pull the supply wagon and all the missing saddles, the Rebel commander realized that his mission had been derailed and that he needed to return to General Early. It was an unhappy group of soldiers that turned south. Already tired and many without shoes, their morale dropped. Later it was reported that the Rebs had been attacked by Indians, but some questioned this. What was agreed on, was it had been a nightmare that none of them wanted to experience again.
