CHAPTER THIRTY -T WO

The Mexican mob had successfully demonstrated their ability to terrorize and devastate the BGO. The brutal murders of Laurie and Scooby sent chilling shockwaves throughout the entire community. Westlock, the security firm that served most of the affluent neighborhoods in Los Angeles, was suddenly swept with a surge of business and urgent requests from homeowners for additional security. They had to shorten their regular hourly surveillance rounds to fifteen-minute intervals in response to the heightened alert. The exclusive once-secure communities now felt vulnerable and susceptible to the same calamities typical in most urban neighborhoods—and they didn’t like it.

Orion made sure that all of his places were protected and privy to the beefed-up measures that Don Mega made available. Around-the-clock sentries were assigned to guard every spot under Orion’s umbrella. It offered a degree of safety and played a key role in the recovery process in dealing with this plight.

Corey was in the office at Orion’s house in Hollywood Hills. He was at the computer, sitting on the edge of his seat, eyes fixed on the monitor screen. He was on the brink of something big, possibly a major breakthrough. Pete informed them that Juan Delgado’s men had been using file-sharing apps to siphon personal information from their computers. That meant they had spyware programs on their CPU, which made it possible for Corey to access their browsing habits as well. He could retrieve their information without their knowledge.

Orion had recently purchased Spybot’s Search and Destroy software for his computers to eliminate their vulnerability. However, Delgado’s men had not made those provisions. Foolishly, they underestimated their opponents.

“Oh my God!” Corey uttered in astonishment.

Orion looked up from his desk. “What you got, my nig?” He pushed aside the papers in front of him.

“Hold on, give me a few more seconds,” he told him as he maneuvered the cursor on the screen. His hands floated over the keyboard, then tapped a key. “Here it is. Damn!” he cried out in disbelief.

Orion leaped from his seat, skirted around his desk, and hovered over the computer.

Corey continued, “Check this out. Those idiots apparently set up a headquarters at the Pasadena Hilton. They have been renting the Roosevelt Hall for the last few weeks, and they have been sending a hell of a lot of e-mails to the Caribbean.”

“Oh, hell no! That’s where Juan Delgado is. He’s been out there on his yacht for months now. I should have known that he would do something dirty like that.” Orion turned from the computer and slammed his fist into his open palm, making it pop like a firecracker. “They are right under our damn nose,” he muttered as he began to pace. “That slick, dirty son of a bitch.”

Corey looked up with anger glowing in his eyes. “He’s gonna be a dead son of a bitch. If I get my hands on him, I’ll kill him,” he said, animosity seeping out of his pores.

He was hit with the vivid reminder of how Laurie and Scooby had been viciously murdered, slaughtered like livestock.
