27. The Second Storm

CAT

The ride back to the forest edge is a somber one.

It’s silent other than the whistling wind, the occasional roar of the beast, and the flapping of its wings. I can tell than Andy is enjoying himself because he’ll occasionally laugh lightly or say “wow” while looking at the ground below. Honestly though, so many things about this situation are terrifying.

I lean onto Amber in front of me and notice how much my body is shaking. The images of my mom being taken keep replaying over and over in my head.

When we start nearing the spot where we climbed through the wall, Paxton begins steering the dragon toward the ground, and we all grip the beast’s back and each other, hanging on for dear life. The monstrous wings beat with more vigor as we near the ground, but my shaking begins to gradually subside.

When the creature’s claws finally dig into the ground, we all hastily jump off and crash back into the forest at full speed, both to avoid being spotted again and to keep from becoming lunch for our gracious conveyance. We retrace our path back through the forest at a run (as always), Paxton in the lead.

We finally make it back to the wall and slip through the hole to the other side, as a thunderous, yet distant, roar emanates from above. We all look up to watch the dragon climb higher and higher through the air until it’s miles away, only to disappear into the thick layer of clouds that has blanketed the sky.

“Where do you think it’ll go?” Andy asks.

“Hopefully nowhere near civilization,” Connor says, with a little chuckle. “We might’ve just created a new problem for Wicketmarl.”

It strikes me as odd for a moment that I’m not at all worried about the fact that a dragon just climbed out of a book, or that we rode it back to safety, or that it’s now loose. I’m only worried about my parents. Does that make me selfish?

“We need to get moving,” Paxton says, pulling his Holvnid out of his bag. “Those clouds look nasty.”

We all don our Holvnids (and it only strikes me now that we probably should’ve worn them while talking to my mom inside the house) and start our trek in silence through the ever-darkening wood. After a while, Kye comes over and places his arm around my shoulders. He doesn’t say anything, but I appreciate the sentiment. We walk in this way for some time, periodically regrouping and altering directions; no one is quite sure where to go at the moment.

As night falls completely, we stumble upon a cluster of rather neat looking houses, and agree to remain here, possibly for the foreseeable future. Despite the fact that there are quite a few homes in good shape, we decide that it’s best if everyone remains together in one. For this purpose, the largest and most accommodating house is selected, and we make our way inside just as droplets from the dark blanket above begin making their coarse, irregular music against the ground, roof, and windows.
