The next morning, while having breakfast with them, I hear the crunching sound of wheels on the driveway. Who else could be here? Itâs not like this is a place that people just drop in.
The weather a bit warmer today, Iâm just in a pair of jeans and white t-shirt, feet bare as I head to the door to greet whoever it is.
Opening the big front door, to my surprise, there are two police officers standing there looking at me.
âGood morning, sir, we are looking for Mr. Richard Darby,â one asks, with no emotion or indication of what they are doing here.
âYou found him. What can I do for you?â I ask, standing a little taller now, straightening my shoulders and holding my breath. Part of me is panicking that something has happened to Mum.
âIâm Sergeant Collins, and this is Constable Smith. May we come in to talk for a moment?â The straight poker face they are both wearing is starting to concern me.
âOf course, come through. Just having breakfast with some friends, so Iâll take you into the lounge room.â
I can hear the guys still carrying on in the kitchen, oblivious to who is in the house.
My heart is racing slightly as to what this is about. âPlease, take a seat,â I offer, pointing to the couch behind them.
The older one shakes his head. âNo, weâll stand, thank you.â Okay, itâs one of those conversations then, one that is not a friendly one.
âWhat can I do for you then?â I stand with my arms crossed, more defensive now.
âMr. Darby, are you the owner of a Maserati, registration plate DH 0012 stored in The Darby Hotel in Rome?â the younger less-aggressive cop, Smith, starts.
âYes, I do, is there a problem?â Part of me breathes a sigh of relief that itâs not anything to do with Mum.
âWere you at the hotel last Thursday night?â he continues.
âYes, what is going on?â I ask, getting frustrated very quickly at his slowness at getting to the point.
âWere you driving the car that night?â Grumpy Collins asks.
âYes, I was. Now what is all this about? Just spit it out, for Godâs sake.â Iâm about ready to lose my temper with them. Donât come into my house talking in riddles. I hear the chairs moving on the tile floor in the kitchen, the guys obviously hearing my voice raising.
Just as they walk into the room behind me, words I never thought Iâd hear are directed at me. âMr. Darby, we will need you to accompany us to the station in London for questioning.â
âWhat the hell for!â There is no holding back now.
âDistribution of drugs.â Sergeant Collins holds handcuffs in front of him.
âYou have to be fucking joking.â What the actual fuck is going on?!
âYou have the wrong person.â Flynn is beside me and saying what I should be saying, but Iâm still in shock.
âIâm calling our lawyer, this is bullshit.â Forrest disappears out of the room with his phone to his ear.
âMore will be explained at the station in London.
