I return to college with a full understanding of the debt my father owes. The amount feels insurmountable. However, I believe where there’s a will, there’s a way, and I won’t let my father down.

I look forward to my visit with Dominus. I’ve come to appreciate the weekly escape it has become for me. Wanting to keep things light and entertaining at the dinner table, I share the story about my failed attempt at pranking my father, and I am treated to the delighted giggles of all four subs as I detail Pop’s expertly executed double-cross.

Afterward, when Dominus asks me to join him in the library, I’m still riding high on the exceptional meal and excellent table conversation, so I am totally unprepared when he asks, “What troubles you, Master Anderson?”

“What makes you think anything is wrong?” I chuckle, wondering what telltale sign I let slip that it should invite his question.

Dominus meets my gaze with compassion in his eyes. “I am not asking as your mentor but as your friend.”

His words completely unravel me, and I am left mute.

He smiles. “I observe people, Master Anderson. I’ve found that what a person does in any given situation tells me far more about them than anything they say.”

I shake my head. “What gave me away?”

“You often use humor as a shield, but it is more than that. I see the apprehension in your eyes, and that wasn’t there before. What is wrong?”

While I am impressed by his intuitiveness, I want to protect my family and am purposely vague when I answer him. “My family’s ranch recently switched to a better mode of operation. But, as with any change, there’s bound to be growing pains, and we are definitely feeling the pressure right now.”

Dominus looks at me thoughtfully. “I’m sure your concerns are valid, but I am certain of two things, which should help relieve some of the pressure.”

“What’s that?”

“When it comes to business, there is always a solution to any problem you face. I have seen it time and time again throughout my career.” He pauses, looking directly into my eyes. “And you, Master Anderson, have a good head for business.”

Dominus says it with such authority that I believe him, and an unexpected sense of calm washes over me. “I appreciate your vote of confidence.”

He nods. “Diligence and belief are the cornerstones of every good businessman…and Dominant.”
