IT WASN’T LONG BEFORE Sarel had returned to take Hazel to the great hall for her midday meal. She could have used more sleep, but she wanted to meet with Ozaran more than she wanted to rest, so she went.

The table in the great hall was set with elegant white porcelain plates and bowls, delicate golden goblets emblazoned with the image of a griffin, and a row of golden candelabras down the center. It was all set on a backdrop of pale blue linen. A heavy weight fell on Hazel’s shoulders as she realized she was about to have a meal with a king. She didn’t belong here. But she here was, and there was no turning back now.

Eyva and Korin were already seated next to each other. Eyva sat with a straight back and tense muscles. Korin leaned away from the table with his hands folded casually on his stomach, although Hazel suspected he felt as out of place as she did. Alator perched on a stool high enough for him to reach the table with ease. He blinked slowly upon seeing her, a sign she took to mean he was happy she was there.

Hazel took the only empty chair left. It would put her next to Ozaran. She tapped her toes inside her shoes, expelling nervous energy. Her stomach twisted into a tight knot. She was going to make a fool of herself. There were all sorts of rules and etiquette someone should know before dining with a king. She knew none of it. Shouldn’t Eyva have coached her on what to do? But then, they’d been too busy trying to stay alive and uncaught for lessons in etiquette.

All heads turned as Ozaran walked in. He beamed at them, blue eyes glittering. He wore a thin gold circlet on his brow, boots that came up to his knees embroidered with a roaring gold griffin, a crisp white shirt, and a deep blue vest with tiny buttons that reminded Hazel of the midnight sky. He was handsome and younger than she expected, younger than Eyva.

But like a dream gone wrong, the smile disappeared. He doubled over as if punched in the stomach by some unseen force and collapsed on the floor. Eyva’s chair scraped back, and she ran to him.

Hazel jumped to her feet and scanned the room for the assailant, but when she found none, she crouched down on the floor beside the fallen king and Eyva.

“Ozaran, I’m here with you,” Eyva whispered as she lay Ozaran’s head in her lap. His body convulsed, every muscle going taut, and his back arched. He opened his eyes, and they flashed with glowing yellow fire. Hazel gasped. Something was possessing him. Fear snaked its way into her heart. Her magic stirred in reaction to her fear, but she stifled it. Eyva wasn’t acting like there was a reason to be afraid, so Hazel would not give in to panic.

“Can I help?” Hazel asked, finally finding her voice.

“Hold his hand so he at least knows we’re here.
