Chapter 22

“We need your help,” said Eugene McCleary to the public defender’s office manager, Blossom Carranza. Rhett Ferrin sat with McCleary in front of Blossom’s busy desk. The centrally located office she inhabited was filled with active things, such as a push cart for food for an upcoming office party, compact discs of playful country music that a passersby would hear in the hour before closing time, various computer flat screens she would set up for new attorneys, and Costco bags full of items for the office commissary used to raise money for employee parties.

“I hear your trial is going well upstairs,” said Blossom, who was about 50 years old, “except for your lead attorney being arrested. That’s a first. But, hey, if he can get the prosecution that riled up, he must have been doing something right. We want you back as soon as this is all cleared up, Gene. I haven’t taken out anything from your old office. What sort of help do you need?” She smiled as she spoke, and her voice had a wonderful easy but authoritative quality as she jumped from one happy point to another.

“There is a video,” said Rhett with gravity, “of certain members of your office talking about a trial in your conference room. The Zarate case, I believe. We have reason to believe the district attorney illegally recorded this meeting to gain an advantage during the trial. The head of your department, Jill Bertola, and several other senior attorneys are in the video talking about trial strategy. We are looking for the video.”

“When I heard on the news about recordings,” said Blossom, “I was wondering if our office had been bugged also. But how do you know we were recorded if you don’t have the video?”

“We have a witness that saw Mr. Gunn watching it in his office,” said Ferrin. “I can’t give any more detail than that.”

“Wow, the head guy…” said Blossom, twisting strands of her shoulder-length hair nervously. She stayed atypically speechless for a short minute. “I am wondering who outside of our office would have access to our conference room to set something like that up. Everybody in our office is pretty loyal. We’ve all known each other for years. Not much turn over. And you don’t stay here long if you don’t believe in the cause. The work load is heavy. The reward is simply helping people in trouble. And freeing the innocent. I know you are innocent, Gene. You are too gentle of a person to have hurt anyone. You won’t even stomp on a spider underneath your desk.” Her ample body swiveled a little to her left as she put her hands behind her head. “I have an idea. I am really close to the janitors because we work with them a lot with such a large office.”

“You need to be really careful,” said Rhett. “We are dealing with illegal activity. And you know what happened to Heather.”

“I didn’t know her,” said Blossom, “but I have heard from other attorneys in our office that she was gorgeous.
