Gratify and Delight
You’ll Need:
Greeting cards, notepaper, cartoons and jokes cut from newspapers and books.
Inexpensive gifts such as a stuffed Piglet, a handcrafted mug for his morning tea, a bottle of body lotion that she loves but won’t spend the extra three bucks for.
Time required: A few minutes a day.
When to Do It:
• When your love expression muscles have atrophied.
• When you think surprises are foolish.
• When your partner is going through a rough time.
• When you feel incapable of coming up with innovative ideas.
• Anytime you want to say, “I treasure you.”
What Is It?
Picture this: You want to declare your devotion, ardor, and zeal for this majestic person you share your life with, but you can’t think of any good way to do that. Candy? He’s cutting down on fat. Flowers? I did that last time. Shoe shine? Hmm. . . .
A mainstay of nurturing the relationship is finding small, frequent, remarkable, and discriminating ways to acknowledge your sweetheart. While there is nothing wrong with flowers (I got some while writing this chapter, and I loved them) or other dear stand-bys (every woman I interviewed mentioned how much she likes to be waited on), you have so many feelings to express, so many shades of gratitude to give form to, that you need a kaleidoscope of delicious choices to choose from.
What to Do:
Notes
The questionnaires I sent to couples almost all came back with suggestions for love notes. Try:
A full-blown love letter. Check out Love Letters by Lady Antonia Frazer for inspiration. You could start your letter by completing the sentence:
How do I love thee . . .
I would marry you again because . . .
I appreciate you for . . .
