CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Hope stirred, leaving the land of sleep but, per her usual morning routine, didn’t open her eyes. Waking up needed to be done in stages to ensure she limited the amount of grumpy she directed at her family. Plus, this morning, her body was heavy and engulfed in a stifling heat that left her especially agitated. She squirmed in her bed, causing her hand to rub against something fleshy and covered in hair. Hope’s eyes popped open as she became acutely aware of two things. One, she was not in her bed in her home in England. Two, she was lying flush against the chest of a very large man.

Her wide eyes stared at the sandy brown skin covered in a smattering of midnight black hair. A red hot flush sent her face up in flames. How had she ended up here? Slowly, the events of however many days ago came rushing back. She’d tried to escape and failed miserably. The dull ache in her leg resulted from her desperate final attempt to get away. Somehow, between then and now, she’d ended up in bed with Shaeen.

Her eyes slowly traveled downward. A sound somewhere between a sigh of relief and a groan of disappointment escaped her lips as she saw the sheet blocking his lower half from her view. Was he clothed beneath that sheet? Hope swallowed hard, gathering her courage to move.

Shaeen’s chest rumbled, causing her to close her eyes against the mortifying gravity of the situation. He was awake, and he’d caught her staring at his bare chest. Her blush deepened as she prayed for the power of invisibility.

“Good morning, Amira. Did you rest well?” Shaeen asked.

Hope couldn’t bring herself to look at his face, but she could hear the merriment in his voice. At least one of them found this situation amusing. “I believe so.” It was all Hope could say. She scooted back, widening the gap between them, still unable to meet his gaze. “I… We… um…”

Hope clamped her mouth shut. She wasn’t even sure what she was trying to say. Her flustered brain couldn’t think past, I am lying in bed with Shaeen. The man in question chuckled again then put a finger under her chin and lifted her face so her eyes met his.

“I would never take what you did not offer me. We have not known the pleasures of each other’s bodies.” Shaeen paused, a wickedly handsome grin on his face. “Not yet.”

Hope’s face heated under the weight of his implication, but she didn’t burrow under the covers to hide her face like she wanted to do.

“You are in my bed—where you will remain until we reach Zawhar in a day’s time—because we both needed the rest, and after your rather poorly executed attempt to run away, I will not allow you out of my sight.”

There were several ways Hope could react to his declaration. Some of which, although satisfying for her ego and sense of rightly deserved retribution, would only anger Shaeen and possibly end with her being locked away alone.
