Chapter 22: Meet the Contestants

It was one of those days when I realized how entirely insane my life had become. We had just toured a crime scene in the territory of one mafia family. We were on our way to a meeting about a storage locker holding Russian mob secrets, and we would end our day in an update meeting with the head of the Italian mafia, hoping to arrange a meeting with the city’s largest drug cartel. I would then be having an un-date with Fletcher to discuss information about said Mexican cartel.

While I held out hope I would be able to clear my dad of his legal trouble soon, I couldn’t help realizing that I was becoming more embroiled every day with the very thing I was swearing my family wasn’t involved with.

Grand and I loaded back into the Escalade. We needed to pick up DC before the update meeting with Saul and wouldn’t have time after we met with Burns and Dr. Jaffe about the Russians, so he would be coming with us to meet them.

Fergus had seemed unnerved by the development of Elise Toucci showing up at the Palmeros’. He kept insisting that we couldn’t tell Saul we had seen Elise. I understood he didn’t want to damage Saul’s opinion of his granddaughter, but we needed to know what her involvement was. It was too big of a coincidence for her to be at the site where the body was found.

“Are you going to tell him?” Grand asked as we drove toward DC’s.

“I’m not sure. I get where Fergus is coming from. I don’t want to upset Saul if I don’t have to.”

“Learning disappointing things about family is never easy,” she said.

I knew we weren’t talking about Saul and Elise anymore.

“No. But we don’t know everything yet. Maybe there’s more to her story. Maybe we should talk to her first.”

“Maybe she won’t be a stubborn ass and will actually talk to us,” she said.

Claude was still refusing to see anyone. My dad had been denied visitors but wasn’t saying anything either. The two people who could tell us the most about what was going on with our situation were currently not talking to us.

I pulled into DC’s and found a place to park the monster truck. Grand and I headed up to DC’s. From the hall, we could tell that the door was ajar, but the apartment was eerily quiet.

“You packing?” Grand asked. She must have felt the unease of the situation as well.

We slowed our approach. Since the Russian encounter, we were both more on alert.

“Grand, not every situation calls for a gun.”

“Easy for you to say. You’re not the one who’s been kidnapped.”

“DC?” I called out and pushed open the door farther. We moved into his apartment but were instantly at a standstill.

“Good lord, it’s the Red Wedding massacre,” Grand said.

Wedding Central looked like a hurricane had hit it. The army of cake toppers I had admired on my last visit had toppled and lay all over the floor.
