Chapter 10
It must have been hours since Erik had left him with a gaping hole where he used to have emotions. The other gaping hole was the ring of metal, still stuck in his aching jaws, so Jack kept giving him water throughout the day to prevent his mouth from going completely dry. The boy had to clean him after breakfast, and the humiliation hurt more than anything else. He didn't want Jack to see him like that, but there was no fight left in him.
During the long hours in the stall, he imagined how it could have been if he were stronger, braver, or had more willpower. The situation he found himself in proved how much he wasn't any of those things, and it was a heart-wrenching realization. He was a poor baker, barely scraping a living. He didn't know about honorâit wasn't his world. That didn't make him any less embarrassed when Jack heard him cry and came around to offer some comfort. Strangely enough, it did help. The boy hugged him, braided his hair and Reuben didn't even have to say a word. Not that he could have with his mouth forced open. All the affection he'd received since yesterday was like a whole new world. It felt good. He supposed that was how he had felt when his mother was still alive, though he didn't remember much.
With them both stuck in the stable for the whole day, Jack started talking for them both, to get rid of the taunting silence. He told Reuben about being raised in a remote village, knowing only the world within the circle of high palisades that were supposed to keep everyone safe. They couldn't. The villagers forgot that zombies were not the only danger out there and that wooden walls would burn down if set on fire.
Slave hunters took everyone, and Jack never saw his family again. Most men would be used for hard labor, women for prostitution or sold as house servants. Jack was given to Erik as a present, but unlikely as it was, the master decided to set him free. Jack might have walked away, but for a frightened country boy like him, Erik's mansion offered a safe haven from the chaos of the city. So he stayed, working for a small income in this strange house. Apparently, the only freedom Erik didn't value was that of horses.
It must have been hours 'til they heard heavy footsteps outside the stall. Reuben tensed up, his whole body breaking out in goose bumps. After what had happened in the morning, he felt cheated. He'd given Erik a great blowjob, or at least the best he could considering the circumstances, and the bastard had just left the brace on him. His mouth was now as dry as a desert, and his jaws hurt from hours of being spread like some kind of mouse trap. Calling the situation unpleasant would be an understatement.
Jack gave him a reassuring smile and sped out of the stall to meet Erik halfway.
