Jacobs got to the park in an hour, right on time. He sat in his car for a few minutes, not seeing Franks there yet. Instead of waiting, he and Gunner got out of the car and started walking. He then got a text from Franks saying heâd be there in a minute or two. He and Gunner stood within sight of the parking lot, so Franks could see them once he pulled in. They saw Franksâ car pull into a spot. Franks got out and waved at them, then quickly walked over to their position.
âWhereâs the stuff?â Jacobs asked.
âWhat stuff?â
âYou said something about frisbees and tennis balls.â
âYeah, but what makes you think I have them?â
ââCause you said it?â
âWhy would I have them? I donât own a dog.â
âBecause youâre the one who mentioned it.â
âYeah, man, only because I figured you had that kind of stuff.â
âI do, but I didnât bring them because I thought you were.â
âI donât know why youâd think that,â Franks said. âAnyways, letâs just keep on walking, anyway. Maybe weâll find something along the trail.â
Jacobs looked at him strangely. âSuch as?â
âI dunno, a ball, a⦠something. Something we can stick in his mouth. Maybe a stick.â
âOr an arm?â
âNow donât get like that, man. Itâs a nice, beautiful day outside. Letâs just enjoy it.â
Everything still seemed kind of strange to Jacobs, but he was just going to roll with it for now. He was sure Franks had something up his sleeve, but he was probably just waiting for the right time to drop the bomb on him. Jacobs was already bracing himself for it. Theyâd been walking about ten minutes before Gunner started acting funny. He was jerking on the leash, looking very jittery.
âWhatâs wrong, boy?â Jacobs asked.
âHe all right?â
âI dunno. He senses something.â
Franks raised his eyebrows and scratched behind his ear as he turned all around. âLooks like the coast is clear to me.â
âWell, itâs not. I trust his nose more than your eyes.â
âThatâs kind of insulting. True maybe, but still insulting. You could at least pretend.â
Jacobs knelt down and pet his dog on the back. âWhat do you see?â
âYou donât suppose that maybe he senses someoneâs in trouble or something, do you?â
Jacobs stood back up, looking around. He didnât see anything either, but he trusted Gunnerâs nose. Something had caught his attention. âMaybe.â
âWhat do you wanna do? Head home? Forget about this?â
âNo, letâs see what he knows that we donât.â
âUmm, just in case, are you packing? âCause if we get into some type of fight, Iâm probably not much use.â
Jacobs just looked at him. âIâm always packing. And in regards to the other part⦠well, yeah.â
âHey! I did save your life once before, you know. In case you forgot, there was a certain female assassin thatâ¦â
âYeah, yeah, I know. How could I forget? You wonât let me.â
âWell, just want credit where credit is due.â
They started walking again, Jacobs letting Gunner pull him in the direction that he wanted to go. After only three or four minutes, Gunner suddenly stopped and sat down, calming down.
