Anamorphic Lens Flares

The oval aperture of anamorphic lenses and the fact that the footage is stretched horizontally makes anamorphic flares distinctly different and immediately recognizable. They are substantially wider on the horizontal axis, typically with one or two prominent, blue diffraction spikes stretching across the frame. This adds a uniquely dramatic visual component to footage and has been used effectively in movies (or, as some may point out, has become a bit of a cliché). Anamorphic flares should certainly be used when elements are composited into anamorphic footage but are better avoided with spherical footage or when the context of a CG scene does not call for an anamorphic emulation. For example, adding anamorphic flares to an architectural render may not be the best choice, as it is unlikely that such a render would be captured in real life with an anamorphic lens. This distinct and recognizable effect is best used only where it truly belongs.
