XXII. Drilling, Reaming, and Chambering the Barrel

STANDARD factory rifle barrels, completely finished in and outside, rifled, chambered, blued, threaded and polished, ready to be attached to the receiver, can be purchased from most factories in normal times, or from the larger dealers in gunsmith supplies, especially for Remington, Winchester, and Savage rifles. The purchaser, obviously, must specify the make, model, caliber, barrel length, barrel cross-sectional shape (round or octagon), and action, and sometimes he must give other details, or else he must deliver the rifle to the factory or dealers and let them attach the new barrel, if they are willing to do this work.

Rifle-Barrel Blanks.—Barrel blanks are usually stocked by a few of the larger dealers and supply houses. These blanks are machined carefully to obtain a perfect balance and rifled accurately. They are gauged about as precisely as are the barrels at the government arsenals, which are designated as “star gauge.” However, these blanks are not finished, chambered, blued, threaded, or polished. These operations, plus head-spacing and fitting, are left to the gunsmith. Descriptions of such rifle-barrel blanks are given here as a guide to gunsmiths who may wish to consider the purchase of blanks, or make their own barrels.

Barrel blanks for calibers .25, .30, .32, .35, .25 Roberts, 7 mm., and .30-06, weigh about 4 pounds 7 ounces; they are 24 inches long; the shoulder length is .765 inch, the cylindrical length (distance between barrel shoulder and start of chamber) is 1.110 inches, the diameter at the muzzle is .700 inch, the diameter at barrel (just ahead of the sharp taper) is .895 inch, the diameter at the chamber is 1.125 inches, the diameter at the barrel shoulder is 1.125 inches, the diameter at the start of the chamber is the same as that at the barrel shoulder, and the length of the sharp taper is 2.500 inches.

Barrel blanks for calibers .30/30, .300 Savage, .303 Savage, and .30-06, are made of the best grade smokeless steel, and have the following dimensions: bore diameter, .300 inch; depth of rifling, .004 inch; 6 grooves; one turn in 12 inches; right-hand twist; weight about 5½ pounds. They have a chamber diameter of 1 inches; shoulder length, ¾ inch; diameter at muzzle, 1 inches; total length, 24¼ inches. There is no sharp taper from the start of the chamber to the muzzle, as there is on the previously described barrel blank. The shoulder is rough turned and the barrel is given a hot rolled finish.

Barrel blanks for experimental purposes in caliber .32-20 are made of the best smokeless steel, the shoulder is rough turned, and the barrel has a hot rolled finish. The length is 31 inches, the shoulder length is 1⅛ inches, the diameter at the chamber is 1 inch, the diameter at the muzzle is 1 inches, and there is no sharp taper. The bore diameter is .3045 inch; depth of rifling, .003 inch; 6 grooves; one turn in 20 inches; right-hand twist; weight about 6½ pounds. For experimental purposes in caliber .
