Obedience is another sport in which Australian Cattle Dogs can thrive. Dogs must perform a variety of tasks including heeling, sitting, retrieving dumbbells, and staying in a sit, down, or stand. Different levels of difficulty allow dogs of all ages and experience levels a chance to compete. Lower levels are performed on-leash and the challenges are relatively easy, such as heeling, sitting, and lying down. More advanced levels are performed off-leash and dogs are asked to perform more difficult tasks, such as lengthy stays and retrieving dumbbells, and stay for longer periods of time. If traditional obedience competitions sound boring, you may also want to consider rally obedience, a faster-paced competition where similar tasks are performed, but in a quicker sequence. Signs are posted around the course instructing handlers and dogs to perform 10-20 tasks as quickly and accurately as possible.

Agility is a great way to test your communication and exercise your dog’s body and mind. Agility competitions are high-energy events that involve a handler and dog working together off-leash to overcome a variety of obstacles such as jumps, tunnels, and weave poles. The fastest dog with the most accurate round wins. Competitors are divided into groups by size, so smaller breeds are not forced to compete with larger breeds.
