The interest can be either a barrier or bridge to social contact, but can also be used constructively at school and in psychological therapies or become the basis of a successful career. When one considers the attributes associated with the special interests, it is important to consider not only the benefits to the person with Asperger’s syndrome, but also the benefits to society. There have been suggestions that successful individuals in the sciences and arts have personalities that resemble the profile of abilities associated with Asperger’s syndrome (Fitzgerald 2005; Ledgin 2002; Paradiz 2002).
