What a Character!
Oscar Polk, who played Pork, the O’Hara’s house servant, debuted on Broadway in the 1927 original melodrama The Trial of Mary Dugan. He secured roles in fourteen other Broadway productions from 1929 to 1943, including Face the Music, the 1932 Moss Hart–Irving Berlin musical-comedy collaboration; The Green Pastures, the 1935 musical play that retold Old Testament stories through African American perspectives; and Swingin’ the Dream, the 1939 musical comedy that included cast mate Butterfly McQueen. Polk reprised his role of Gabriel in the 1936 film version of The Green Pastures, which featured Eddie “Rochester” Anderson in the part of Noah.
After GWTW, Polk’s film career continued, most notably with 1942’s Reap the Wild Wind, in which he played the character Salt Meat, and 1943’s Cabin in the Sky, in which he played dual characters, Deacon and Fleetwood, in the all–African American musical.
He was scheduled to begin a major role in the play Leading Lady when he stepped off a curb in New York City’s Times Square and was fatally struck by a taxicab. Polk died on January 4, 1949, at the age of forty-nine.
Everett Brown, who played Tara’s foreman and Scarlett’s Shantytown rescuer Big Sam, began acting in 1927, playing Nahalo in South Sea Love. Most other film roles throughout his twenty-six-year career had him typecast as natives or slaves. Look for him in The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932); I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932); Jungle Jim (1936); Nothing Sacred (1937), playing a policeman; and Boys Town (1938). The last of his forty films was White Witch Doctor in 1953. Brown died on October 14, 1953, at the age of fifty-one.
Howard C. Hickman was a veteran stage actor, director, screenwriter, and motion picture character actor by the time he was tapped to play John Wilkes in GWTW. He had pre-GWTW roles in more than two hundred films, including Twentieth Century (1934), Libeled Lady (1936), and May Time (1937).
After GWTW, Hickman appeared in sixty-six films, including Boom Town (1940), which reunited him with Clark Gable; Strike Up the Band (1940); and Cheers for Miss Bishop (1941), which reunited him with Mary Anderson, Rand Brooks, and William Bakewell. Hickman died on December 31, 1949, at the age of sixty-nine.
Leona Roberts brought a wealth of acting experience to the role of Mrs. Meade. In 1926, she debuted both in the original Broadway play Saturday Night and in her first feature film, starring in the lead role of Poor Mrs. Jones. Settling into supporting roles, Roberts appeared in thirty Broadway productions from 1926 to 1937, and then Hollywood beckoned. She had character roles in twenty-five films, most notably Sister Clarke in Of Human Hearts (1938), house servant Mrs. Hannah Gogarty in Bringing Up Baby (1938), and Caroline Meade in GWTW.
After GWTW, Roberts had supporting roles in four Broadway plays and nineteen films, including 1940’s The Blue Bird, which reunited her with Laura Hope Crews. Roberts’s last film was 1949’s Chicago Deadline. She died on January 29, 1954, at the age of seventy-four.
