Relaxing through activity
Sometimes people notice that relaxing produces unpleasant feelings in their bodies that are associated with negative emotions, or they find that relaxing actually makes them feel more anxious. This isn’t uncommon. In addition, when we’re in certain mind/brain states, relaxing might be a bit tough.
If I’m very uptight or agitated about something, what works for me is focusing on soothing breathing along with some physical activity. So I might try to focus my mind on the here and now and engage in soothing breathing but also carry out a physical activity such as cycling, digging the garden, taking a walk, doing the dishes (okay, emptying the dish washer) or playing my guitar.
