Requires and Helps Students to Fill Information Gaps
Structure it so groups have different topics that donât overlap too much but at the same time fit together enough to help all students build up important concepts by listening to all of the poster presentations. For example, each team might focus on a different aspect of the culture or history of a certain group of people, and in the end they put the information together to complete their projects.
Have each member of one group pair up with each member of another group to share their posters in pairs (instead of having just one person from group share and a whole group listen). This can help maximize the amount of focused speaking and listening that students engage in.
As students listen to each presenter, have them try to think of at least one thing that they really want to know about the topic, especially the information that will help them accomplish the larger purpose, task, or project. They can put this question on a card that you collect. Alternate who gets to ask for this information at the end of each presentation so that itâs not just the same student asking each time. The presenter can also respond with something like âThatâs an interesting question. How will it help you with your final project?â
If the activity spans two or more days, have students practice explaining their ideas and posters (they can make a small copy of it) to parents or others at home as part of their homework. The listeners at home ask clarifying questions and can write down their understanding of the concept on the studentâs homework page (or audio-record it).
