âAnd, um... the townsfolk said Lud would be the perfect devil.â
Marlene was deeply apologetic. Her request was like telling Lud to his face that he looked like a devil. And Lud already worried about the way he looked.
âUm, you can say no! Iâm so sorry!â
Marlene tried to apologize, but Lud silently stopped her by raising a hand.
âNo... Iâll do it.â
Then he tightened his hand into a fist.
âAfter all, itâll make everyone smile!!â
To be honest, it was a little... No, it was very painful. He would feel like he was being mocked for his scary face, which he already worried about. However, the townsfolk were expecting it. And the children were looking forward to it. Compared to those realities, his discomfort was inconsequential.
âEven if Iâm there as the Devil, at least I can participate in the Holy Festival. Thatâs much better than last year!â
âMaster... Poor you...â
Ludâs touching resolution moved his loyal servant Sven to tears. Marlene was happy and relieved.
âReally? Thank you! This is a huge help! Now I can set a good example for the children!â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWell, kids these days are so skeptical. They donât believe in either the Saint or the Devil!â
During a revolution in industry, railways had connected continents, aircraft had taken to the skies, and huge vessels were sailing the seas. Now it was an age when humanoid assault weapons stalked the battlefield. Only a few children wholeheartedly believed in traditions the way they did one or two hundred years ago.
âIf you say, âDo as I say or the Devil will take you away,â they laugh scornfully. So I thought I should stake my adult dignity on doing something about it!â
âWere you planning this from the beginning?â
Sven looked suspicious.
âWell... we all have our reasons.â
Marlene laughed mischievously as she answered. So it was decided that Tockerbrot would provide both sweets for the Holy Festival and staff disguised as the Saint and the Devil.
