CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Wren crossed the living room to dig her cell phone out of her purse. It was evening, and theyâd come home late, after digging through way too many of the Highway Butcherâs victims. She was a little wired, though, having trouble settling in. She looked at the screen of the phone, but she didnât recognize the number.
She answered it anyway. âHello?â
âMs. Delacroix?â said the person on the other end of the line. âItâs Arnold Davis from the district attorneyâs office. I spoke to you about Mr. Marner and the deal.â
âOh, right,â she said.
âWell, Iâm glad you decided to talk to him.â
âI didnât really,â said Wren. âWhy, did he take the deal?â
âSigned it this morning,â said Davis.
âOh,â said Wren, sitting down heavily on the couch. âWow.â
âI know itâs not what you wanted,â said Davis. âAnd I know itâs not what the families of those little girls wanted either. But we really didnât want to go to trial with this one. There were too many variables and not enough physical evidence. This really is better. We can guarantee heâs off the streets for this. And, look, the good news is that all the cases of the girls are officially still open. We havenât actually indicted him on those.â
âI know,â said Wren softly.
âSo, should evidence come to light,â said Davis, âwe can go for that with him. This buys us time.â
âRight,â said Wren. She leaned into the couch, and she felt like crying.
Davis sighed. âLook, itâs not what I wanted either. I donât know how long youâve been at this, but you seem young, Ms. Delacroix, and I gotta tell you, this system, itâs broken in so many ways. We do the best that we can with what we have. Itâs not always black and white.â
âI know that.â Wren took a deep breath. âI know that, of course I do. But eighteen years? Only eighteen years?â
âHeâll do more than that,â said Davis. âTrust me, thereâs no judge out there sympathetic to this guy.â
âEven so, heâll probably get out someday. The max on that deal was forty years.â
âThatâs true.â
âHeâs going to live forty more years,â said Wren. âAnd then heâll be free. And you didnât look at those little girlsâ bodies.â
âI saw pictures, maâam.â
Wren sat up on the couch, and her whole body felt like a tightly coiled spring. âHe killed them. They were only tiny, little girls. He stole their lives from them. And heâs going to get out?â Suddenly, tears were coming out of her eyes.
âIâm sorry, Ms. Delacroix,â said Davis quietly. âI wish I could tell you this was an anomaly, and that usually everything worked out well. But itâs not, and you need to find a way to survive it, because the truth is, we are the good guys, and we do make the world a better place. So, we have to keep fighting, even if we donât win every battle.â
He sounded like Reilly.
âThank you for telling me, Mr. Davis,â said Wren, her voice thick with tears. âI need to hang up now.
