Author’s Preface

Of all the stories found herein there are only two that effectively contain no explicit date; all the others do, and this will cause some readers to find the title Undated Stories either unintelligible or perplexing. Supposing, however, that my purpose is to define these pages as dealing, in substance, with things that do not belong to any particular date or time, that, I think, would explain the title. Which is the worst thing that could possibly happen to it, for the best titles are always those that need no explanation.
